MMAcanada.net reports that sources close to Wanderlei Silva (32-8-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) are indicating a long-awaited 3rd rematch between “The Axe Murderer” and former UFC light heavyweight champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (28-7 MMA, 3-1 UFC) is set to take place at UFC 91.
The bout would be a massive draw, as both fighters are fan-favorites, particularly with former Pride FC fans. If and when agreements are signed, the showdown would co-headline the UFC 91 “Couture v.s. Lesnar”. UFC President Dana White has publicly stated he believes this will by and far be the biggest event in UFC history. The Lesnar fight alone would garner hoards of attention, and it is sure to do so in an even bigger fashion now with such a high powered match between Wandy and Rampage.
It should be noted that Rampage was on the wrong end of two vicious knockouts when facing The Axe Murderer twice before in Japan under the Pride FC banner. Perhaps Jackson’s move from now-former trainer Juanito Ibarra’s camp to Wolfslair in England will provide the powerful ex-champ with enough of an edge to put on a performance similar to that of his against Chuck Liddell.
All science aside, this is a massive announcement for the hardcore MMA fans. Casual fans alike should not miss what will surely be one of the most explosive PPVs the UFC has ever put together. Wanderlei looks to capitalize on momentum built by a brutal KO of Keith Jardine at UFC 84 “Ill Will”, and Rampage surely looks to get back on track to another title shot after losing the belt to tough-as-nails Forrest Griffin and recent legal issues.
UPDATE: The fight will take place at UFC 92, in December.
