Reports across the MMA blogosphere prematurely reported top-ranked featherweight Urijah Faber (21-2) would fight Jose Aldo at WEC 38. 6th-Round.com can now say that match is no longer in the works and it looks like Jens “Lil Evil” Pulver (22-10-1) will look for redemption against the former champ Faber, who is also seeking to reclaim pride after losing the belt to Mike Brown at WEC 36.
Faber and Pulver have met before inside the WEC cage, in a fight that was a war for the ages. At WEC 34 in June, The California Kid scored a decision win over Lil Evil. Jens is a true veteran of the sport, and has competed all over the world including the UFC, WEC, PRIDE, the IFL and Shooto. Albeit the man’s had his share of wins, they’ve come with quite a few losses in recent times. Jens isn’t quite the same warrior he used to be at age 35, and he’s come out on the wrong side of four of his past five fights. Ouch.
With all that being said, there’s sure to be criticism from multiple angles on this match-up. I’m expecting to hear folks say this is a quick way for Faber to score another win against a “name”, Jens doesn’t deserve another shot after his quick KO loss to Leonard Garcia at WEC 36, etc. etc. These points hold some validity, but we all have to admit Faber and Pulver are two exciting guys who love to go for it with their all. I’m expecting some fireworks, and wouldn’t be surprised if we all witness another war that goes the distance.
As for Jose Aldo, rumor has it he’ll likely be facing Josh Grispi. Grispi has put together back-to-back wins since joining the WEC and poses a solid challenge for Josh.
