UFC 97: “Redemption” was in danger of not being held in its originally scheduled venue of the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, due to the rather erratic behavior of the Quebec Athletic Commission (QAC). Up to 2009, North America’s Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts were accepted for bouts in Canadian territory. Everyone was happy, safe and able to compete as they would in Las Vegas or San Jose .

In the past, the differing rules from the QAC’s take on MMA regulations were not enforced. North America’s Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts were in place for events such as UFC 83 and other smaller shows. After a recent Strikebox show attempted to keep their fights standing as the QAC would like it, a riot ensued following James Thompson’s delivery of some traditional ground work. Commission officials did not take too kindly to the uproar and wanted to make an example of UFC 97 such that the by-the-book Canadian rules would be enforced from there on.

Luckily for the fans, the fighters and the UFC, the QAC saw the brighter side of things and realized that creating a rift regarding something which has been anything but a problem, for many years now, would have been in poor taste and effectively halted a stimulus for the local economy to the tune of approximately 25 million dollars.

Now we can all sit back and continue to anticipate Chuck Liddell’s challenge in facing Mauricio Rua, Anderson Silva looking to defend his middleweight belt again and a slew of other great fights including, David Loiseau’s return to the Octagon.
