UFC 112 is fast approaching and the promotion will be making its first appearance in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday. The card is loaded with intriguing match-ups including Anderson Silva’s middleweight title defense against Demian Maia, Frankie Edgar seeking to solve B.J. Penn’s dominance and legends Matt Hughes and Renzo Gracie meeting in a welterweight clash.
A fight no-one should sleep on though, is Mark Munoz vs. Kendall Grove. Although Munoz started his UFC career in the light heavyweight division, he made the move to 185 after a KO loss to Matt Hammill and has been perfect in the new weight class. He meets his toughest test yet this weekend when he’ll tangle with former TUF contestant “Da Spyda” Grove.
Grove possesses better BJJ credentials but has let his condition go in the past and paid the price for it, while Munoz’s gas tank has yet to be a factor. With his ground game evolving under the tutelage of the Nogueira brothers, it should be enough in combination with the Filipino’s world class wrestling to defend Grove’s multiple submissions attempts if the fight hits the floor.
Things to keep in mind and look for in the bout would be the following.
- Trains with Nogueira brothers at Blackhouse gym
College wrestling champ
Excellent agility and speed at 185 lbs.
KO power in his hands
Purple belt under Nog. bro.s
Dedicated, solid condition
- Questionable dedication
Solid BJJ w/ long limbs
Actively seeks submission attempts
Has crumbled under near-TKO pressure
Octagon experience on his side
Could be hungry to break top 10
We’ll continue to preview UFC 112 leading up to fight afternoon/night.
