Hey MMA fans, Tommy H here, back with my predictions for UFC 95! This one looks to be very exciting as Diego Sanchez makes his debut in the Lightweight division. Let’s get started with the first fight of the night.
155 lbs.: Diego Sanchez (19-2) vs. Joe Stevenson (29-9)
Main card (Televised):
170 lbs.: Dan Hardy (20–6) vs. Rory Markham (16-4)
185 lbs.: Nate Marquardt (27-8-2) vs. Wilson Gouveia (12-5)
185 lbs.: Demian Maia (9-0) vs. Chael Sonnen (21-9-1)
170 lbs.: Josh Koscheck (12-3) vs. Paulo Thiago (7-0)
Update, pick outcomes: 2-3
In the first fight, Josh Koscheck takes on Paulo Thiago. Koscheck is a proven veteran with his wrestling ability and knockout power, as seen in his last fight. Thiago is a bit of an unknown, but either way I expect Koscheck to easily win this fight via TKO in the first round via Ground and Pound.
In the second fight, Demian Maia faces Chael Sonnen. Maia is a brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt and has shown his prowess on the ground in all of his fights for the UFC. Sonnen is coming from the WEC as the #1, although following some controversy, middleweight. Look for Maia to take control of this fight and bring it to the ground, where he will submit Sonnen in the first round via triangle choke.
For the third fight, it is Nate Marquardt against Wilson Gouveia. Marquardt is coming off of an impressive victory over Martin Kampmann at UFC 88, and Gouveia is coming off a victory over Jason MacDonald. Gouveia not making weight in his past fight wasn’t something that was very settling with me, and does not make me think that he takes his career seriously. I think that Marquardt is the superior fighter, and will win this fight via TKO in the third round.
In the co-main event, Dan Hardy takes on Rory Markham. Both fighters have only had one fight in the UFC and both trying to make a name for themselves in the welterweight division. Markham showed a great display with the ability to withstand strikes and delivered a devastating head kick KO in his first fight. I see Markham winning this via KO in the second round.
In the main event for 95, Diego Sanchez takes on Joe Stevenson. Sanchez is making his debut in the lightweight division, and has a very tough test in his first fight. Stevenson is a contender for the belt and has already fought for it once before last year, but has dropped 2 of his last 3 inside the octagon. Stevenson has shown a weakness to getting submitted via rear naked choke, something I believe that he has worked hard on in preparation for this fight. I believe that Sanchez has the upperhand in striking and wrestling, but I think he will get caught in one of Stevenson‘s famous guillotine chokes when going for a takedown in the second round.
