Bad news for UFC 103: “Franklin vs. Belfort” as word spreads today of featured bout participant Mike Swick (14-2) having withdrawn due to injury. The situation was first reported by often-unreliable news site, The Sun. 6th-Round.com has contacted Swick’s management and await confirmation.
Update: Swick responds to inquiry via Twitter
officialswick I got foot swept while sparring this week and lost my legs. Landed on back of my head and neck and suffered a pretty bad concussion.
Swick will be replaced by Paul Daley, who now meets Martin Kampmann in the welterweight showdown. “Semtex” is a fairly well-known British fighter currently holding a pro record of 21-8-2 and was already scheduled to face a UFC newcomer before the Swick injury, so he now enjoys a significant upgrade in competition.
As for “Hitman” Kampmann, this is an awful turn of events as a win over Swick would have guaranteed him a shot at current 170 lbs. champ Georges St. Pierre. We’ll wait to see whether Martin remains on the card, but all signs point to it as being a go.
We wish Mike a speedy recovery and quick return to action.
