We’ve received word that there is likely some truth to the rumor that former PRIDE superstar and current WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko will meet Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (also formerly of PRIDE) at Affliction’s third event, to be held on July 11th of this year.
Although unconfirmed, it is widely believed that Affliction will counter-program UFC 100’s historic pay-per-view. It would be an attempt at payback for the UFC having counter-programmed the first two Affliction events, and Fedor vs. Cro Cop would be a huge draw to help make the plan a success.
Emelianenko, considered by many to be the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet, has recently fought and defeated two former UFC champs in Tim Sylvia (submission) and Andrei Arlovski (KO).
Filipovic encoutered rough waters when entering the UFC however has rebounded outside of the organization and most recently defeated Hong Man Choi. Interestingly enough, Fedor also defeated Choi a little over a year ago. Mirko has been rumored to be on the UFC 99 fight card for the Germany-held event, however this rumor would nullify that should it be proven true.
We’ll keep you posted as to developments with this potential title bout.
