With Jon Jones’ win over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua this past Saturday at UFC 128, there are quite a few intriguing fantasy match-ups that could come to fruition this year. Let’s take a look at a few of the fights I was discussing with fellow fans after Shogun had his clock cleaned by the young gun.
Rampage Jackson vs. Rashad Evans: Rashad Evans is matched up with Jon Jones, and I believe he’ll lose that fight. Following the potential loss by Evans and win for Jackson over Matt Hamill, a rematch could easily be made.
Rampage Jackson vs. Shogun Rua: PRIDE never die, as we say. Let’s say Quinton bests Matt in his next fight; this one has to be on the UFC’s radar. It sells itself on all sorts of levels. These gents fought each other in Japan, have knockout power and would surely provide another exciting bout.
Matt Hamill vs. Rashad Evans: Assuming again that Jones defeats Evans, this fight could happen if Matt topples Rampage. It would be a wrestler vs. wrestler fight and could serve as a co-main on a pay-per-view event.
Lyoto Machida vs. Shogun Rua: The trilogy fight would market itself, if Machida gets past Couture. The two men already have a history in the division and sit at 1-1 in their past two meetings.
Randy Couture vs. Rashad Evans: Not all that likely, but possible if Randy wants to keep fighting following a potential loss to Machida. Randy could very well be the favorite heading into this one, but it’s a fight Evans could win.
A lot of assumption is involved with throwing these fights out there, but all can be taken as at least somewhat-likely scenarios. I personally find the Hamill vs. Evans match to garner the most interest, as both men would be close to evenly matched. Hamill has never been to a five round fight in the UFC and could make it there by beating Jackson and Evans back to back.
