As the saying goes, “anything can happen in MMA”. Well folks, that rang loud and true as both “Sugar” Rashad Evans and Frank Mir overcame underdog statuses to earn impressive wins tonight, December 27 at UFC 92: “The Ultimate 2008”.
Billed as a star-studded card of the year, the night of fights lived up to the hype, and then some. Rashad has proved time and time again that he improves with each fight. Unfortunately for Forrest Griffin, Evans came into the Octagon to showcase the same kind of strength and knockout power (and cocky disrespect that is bad for the sport) that earned him the title shot. After it was all said and done, Rashad now wears the heralded UFC light-heavyweight belt.
As for the big boys of the evening, Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, the two heavyweights clashed in a fight that ended earlier than many predicted. Even more shocking, was who stopped the fight. Frank Mir put on the performance of his life and was understandably emotional after posting a fantastic win (for the interim title) over his hero and MMA legend, Nogueira.
Where do they go from here?
Rashad Evans is now presented with some interesting potential matches in his next time around. Personally, I think Rampage getting his crack at re-gaining the belt would be phenomenal as the man violently took care of nemesis Wanderlei Silva. Mir will rematch current UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in 2009, and if he burns Lesnar with even a smolder of the heat he ignited tonight, Mir could very well be champ once again.
