The weekend has come and gone, and so did Alistair Overeem’s hopes of becoming a heavyweight victor at K1. Remy Bojansky, who later revealed he had badly tweaked his knee beforehand, took the decision victory by knocking Overeem down in the last round. The heavyweight tournament winner was Keijiro Maeda.
Looks like UFC light heavyweights Matt Hamill and Brandon Vera will hook ’em up at UFC 101, if both agree to contracts. Both men were victorious at UFC 96 in Columbus, Ohio and scored respective TKO and KO wins.
UFC lightweights rejoice as B.J. Penn will finally have to defend his belt in the 155 lbs. division. Flat-out, without-a-doubt #1 contender Kenny Florian will meet the champ at UFC 101 in Philly. Maybe Penn will now focus at least some of his attention on training as opposed to clinging to the GSP loss.
Seem as though popular female mixed martial artist Gina “Conviction” Carano will get to battle Cristain “Cyborg” Santos at Strikeforce’s August event. The two were likely to meet in the cage under the Elite XC banner, before the promotion died.
We should also mention that Demian Maia has apparently been promised a title shot against the winner of the Silva vs. Leites fight. Interesting, considering that Yushin Okami was supposedly promised the next shot, after he defeated Dean Lister. The middleweight title-and-contender picture is becoming increasingly blurry, due to poor matchmaking by Joe Silva. What happenes with the winner of Hendo – Bisping? Hunh? So many questions at 185 lbs, so few answers. In the meantime, Thales Leites, of all people, will have his crack at Anderson in mid April.
