Diego Sanchez (19-2) recently informed the UFC that he would gladly fight at lightweight, dropping down in size from welterweight. Ask and ye shall receive, as he’ll now have to likely take on 155 lb force Joe “Daddy” Stevenson (29-9).
Stevenson is a great athlete with a rock solid set of skills, but has had a rough go of it inside the Octagon as of late. After reaching #1 contender status and then losing to BJ Penn in a bloody two-round battle, he rebounded with a great win over Gleison Tibau. Unfortunately for Joe, he most recently lost to a red hot Kenny Florian. This fight is a great opportunity for Joe to show he’s still got it and can stay in contetion for a shot at the belt in 2009.
Both men are talented wrestlers with impressive striking capabilities, and I’m not surprised to hear this may very well be the main event at UFC 95. Joe’s recently been awarded his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt, Diego’s going to be a large 155’er, and I can see this being a great way to get ’09 fights rolling.
*Update: This fight will likely be the co-main event.
