Former PRIDE and UFC heavyweight Fabiricio Werdum will make his Strikeforce debut on August 15th as he faces current heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem, MMA Fanhouse reports.
The two met back in May of 2006 while fighting in Japan, with Werdum being the victor by way of submission (kimura). With their history, the rematch factor will likely be pushed as a selling point by Strikeforce.
However strong the marketing is, new fans will likely be unfamiliar with both fighters. Overeem last competed in the organization in 2007 and Werdum makes his banner debut.
Strikeforce’s August 15th event will be headlined by a women’s match as Gina Carano faces her toughest test to date in Cris “Cyborg” Santos.
